After a weekend of geocaching, I've learned about another cool urban treasure hunting site:

http://www.bookcrossing.com

You mark the books you don't want anymore with using an id label and a message that the book is free and has been registered at BookCrossing.Com. You then "release" the book into the "wild" by leaving it at a coffee shop or gas station or in a phone booth for someone to find. The label in the book encourages the person who finds it to let the site know that they have "caught" the book.

I've got a few novels that the used bookstore wouldn't take (they already had too many copies). I think I'll release those around the city.

My screen name on bookcrossing is the same as in LJ.

i really like the concept of this. my only problem is that the only books i buy are those that i plan on keeping around for a long time (which means i don't actually own a lot of books) - everything else comes from (and goes back to) the library. as such, the books i own i'm not likely to want to release, and the books i don't own aren't mine to release....

You can still enroll, "capture" books and then re-release them.
